If you are an employer in Quebec and your payroll is greater than $2 million, you have an obligation to train your employees. Under the Working Skills Act, more commonly referred to as the “1% Training Law”, companies are obligated to invest 1% of their payroll into employee training. This law was introduced in 1996 and applies to all businesses in Quebec with more than 25 employees. It is designed to help employers provide employees with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in the workplace.
One of the training options that employers can choose to invest in is mindfulness training. Mindfulness training is a form of mental health training that helps employees to become more aware of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Mindfulness training can also help employees to better manage stress, improve their performance, and increase their overall well-being. This article will discuss the 1% Training Law focusing on mindfulness training in Montreal.

What is the Working Skills Act?
The Working Skills Act (Act Respecting Work Skills) is a provincial law in Quebec that sets out the rules and regulations for the development, recognition, and certification of work skills. The Act is intended to ensure that workers in Quebec have the necessary skills to meet the needs of the labour market. The Act also sets out the responsibilities of employers, workers, and educational institutions in developing and recognizing work skills. The Act is administered by the Ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale.
It is important to note, for companies who fail to meet this 1% training investment, the difference will be remitted as a contribution to the Quebec government’s workplace training fund.
Quebec has a strong emphasis on workforce training and development. Various programs and initiatives are in place to support employers and employees in acquiring the skills and qualifications necessary to meet the changing needs of today’s labour market. Employers and employees can benefit from government-funded programs, industry-specific programs, and private workplace training, such as mindfulness training, to continuously improve their skills, knowledge, and emotional well-being.
